about

Spike is really about a bunch of things. It's about my relationship to small town white America, it's about jettisoning principles in favor of scapegoating. It's about abandoning responsibility, worshiping the military, and willfully exposing yourself to propaganda that reaffirms your identity at all costs... and it's about water. It's about water in Flint and water in West Virginia. I think a lot of us take instant access to clean water for granted. Every single person in this country lives with either a municipal water system that can fail due to underfunding, or on top of an aquifer that can become polluted to the point of being unusable. We simply can't elect politicians who want to cut revenue and remove protections, and expect to have clean water, 10, 20 years down the road.

This is a long one, as Planes songs go. Another guitar solo I really like. I kinda half-composed it the day before tracking, slept on it, went to the studio in the morning, did 3 takes and it was done. I don't think there's any Jazzmaster on this one, I think it's all Strat and Mustang. The solo is definitely Strat, I think with the mid single coil and bridge humbucker. It might be hard to tell, since the recording quality is mid-fi at best, but I tried to diversify my guitar tone on SLaN.

lyrics

I got news and it’s breaking now,
The old charade is coming down,
I’m not sure if I’ll be allowed to leave.

Saving money when your voice is spent,
Don’t you know the air is for rent,
It’s a privilege you can afford to scream.

'Cause it's bought and it's sold,
So the story goes...

Lick your wounds and blame it on the other,
Make a toast while they spike the water,
That you drink, when you blink.
Principles are shedded like a snake’s skin
It’s not my fault and not my problem,
Not me,
I see what I want to see.

Tow the line and turn the cable on,
Was this sitting here all along?
Just waiting for the chorus to start the song?

Wave the flag and sound the alarm,
Hold me down and break my arm,
For saying we should drop bread instead of bombs.

Cause it’s bought and sold,
So the story goes...

Lick your wounds and blame it on the other,
Make a toast while they spike the water,
That you drink, when you blink.
Principles are shedded like a snake’s skin
It’s not my fault and not my problem,
Not me,
I see what I want to see.

Lick your wounds and blame it on the other,
Like a post while they spike the water,
That you drink,
What do you think?
Principles are shedded like a snake’s skin
It’s not my fault and not my problem,
Not me,
I see what I want to see.

The Planes are a three-piece indie rock band from Brooklyn, NY. Since their founding in 2010 by guitarist/singer Stephen Perry, they’ve earned a reputation for writing catchy indie rock jams, showing up to gigs on time, and taking that last drink ticket off your hands, y’know, if you’re not going to use it anyway and it would just go to waste. ... more
