about

Sleep Like a Noble is the title track from my latest album. It really has two meanings. The meaning of the song is pretty much, "Sleep well, be ok, be at peace, but also, don't forget the pain of the past." As a title to the album (especially paired with the album art by Kaitlin O'Connor), it invokes images of the guillotine. I think the duality of that meaning is a good fit for an album that features both romantic and political themes. Not sure how well I pulled it off, but that's what I was going for.

This is the first quiet/slow track on the album (though it gets loud-ish in the bridge). When I've had a band together, I always want to play the upbeat ones. Energy and volume are security blankets in a sense. I'd kinda like to get a 45 min set together of all the slow ones over the years. I don't know if anyone other than like, me and a few former band members would find that interesting.

lyrics

I was working it out,
But I could not remember,
How I got so ahead of myself,
When I slammed your hand in the cab door.

You were telling me off,
I didn’t mean to hurt you,
But I was in a rush to get out,
An escape, but not an excuse, no.

Sleep like a noble,
Adorned in your fortune,
Wait for the noon sun,
To pry your eyes open.

There’s a plot we can never know,
And it haunts me sweetly,
But given the chance I’d,
Forget it completely.

‘Cause there are scars on my arms,
Scars on your legs,
Scars on both our backs
Everyone’s got scars these days.

Tear up the moleskin,
Walk to the window,
Breathe,
Don’t let me go.

I could bar the door shut,
But I want to remember,
Why we’d get so fucked up,
And escape, an excuse,
Or something more?

The Planes Brooklyn, New York

The Planes are a three-piece indie rock band from Brooklyn, NY. Since their founding in 2010 by guitarist/singer Stephen Perry, they’ve earned a reputation for writing catchy indie rock jams, showing up to gigs on time, and taking that last drink ticket off your hands, y’know, if you’re not going to use it anyway and it would just go to waste. ... more
